RESUMEN

El artículo analiza la idea de España en los volúmenes de la Historia de España dirigidos por Ramón Menéndez Pidal, aparecidos entre 1935 y 1980. En la primera parte se trata de las ideas que Menéndez Pidal expuso principalmente en "Los españoles en la historia" (1947), prólogo al primer volumen de la colección acerca de la identidad de los españoles, la percepción de la unidad de España, y las características de España
como colectividad politica; también de la actitud respecto al país que el autor adopta y propone como modelo a seguir. En la segunda parte, se trata de las ideas de otros autores de la colección, coincidentes en lo fundamental con las del director. Finalmente, en las conclusiones se trata del significado histórico e historiográfico de esta idea de España y su vigencia actual.

ABSTRACT

The article analyses the idea of Spain in the volumes of the Historia de España directed by Ramón Menéndez Pidal, published between 1935 and 1980. In the first part, it deals with the ideas that Menéndez Pidal exposed mainly in 1947, in '"The Spaniards in their History" -prologue of the fust volume of the collection about the identity of the Spaniards, the perception of the unity of the nation, and the main features of Spain as a political collectivity, and the attitude towards the country that the author propases as correct and patriotic. In the second part, it deals with the ideas of others contributors to the Historia, that are similar, in the essential, with that of the director of the collection. Finally, the article ends with sorne brief notes on the historical meaning of this idea of Spain.
