RESUMEN

Durante el siglo XVIII los españoles tuvieron conciencia de ser una nación, pero esta idea no fue ni unívoca ni cerrada. Creada sobre unos elementos comunes -territorio, lengua castellana, monarquía, religión-, se desarrolló como sentimiento de pertenencia respecto a una realidad, España, que era reconocida como un sujeto activo desde fuera de sus fronteras, y que en el interior suscitaba preocupación y deseos de renovación. El conocimiento y la enseñanza de su historia, el teatro, el arte o los escritos surgidos para defender a España y a su cultura frente al desprecio procedente de autores extranjeros, contribuyeron a crear dicha conciencia.

ABSTRACT

During the 18th century the Spanish had conscience of being a nation, but it was not univocal or closed. Created upon a few common elements -territory, Castilian language, monarchy, religion-, was developing a strong conscience of membership to a reality, called Spain, which was understood as an active subject out of its frontiers, and which raised worry and wish of renovation inside them. The knowledge and 1he teaching of its History, the theatre, the art or the literature dedicated to defend Spain and its culture, developed against the scom proceeding from foreign authors, helped to create the above mentioned conscience.
