RESUMEN

Este trabajo analiza el relato de viaje del embajador marroquí Ibn ‘Uá¹¯mÄn al-MaknÄsÄ« por la España de Carlos III, entre 1779-1780, con el fin de abordar la visión que el culto y alto funcionario marroquí tenía de Occidente. El texto refleja el gobierno de Mohamed III y su política de apertura a Europa. El autor expresa su máxima admiración hacia el respeto a la ley y el orden y los logros que han llevado a España a lograr su nivel económico, sin eludir la infraestructura, elemento imprescindible para la reforma y el progreso. Al mismo tiempo, no dudó en manifestar su rechazo a algunos aspectos religiosos y socioculturales. Por otro lado, los monumentos islámicos y la existencia de una comunidad morisca, hacen que España no represente para los musulmanes un “otro absoluto”, por tanto, a lo largo del viaje, los sentimientos del autor oscilan entre el orgullo y el lamento.

ABSTRACT

This paper analyzes the travel diary of the Moroccan ambassador, Ibn ‘Uá¹¯mÄn al-MaknÄsÄ«, who travelled to Spain between 1779 and 1780, during the reign of Carlos III, in order to approach the vision that the educate and high Moroccan Official had of West. The text reflects the government of Mohamed the IIIrd and his opening relationships politics with Europe. The author expresses his maximum admiration towards the respect for law and order as well as achievements that had led Spain to reach its economical level, without avoiding the great strides in infrastructure, indispensable element for the reform and the progress. At the same time, he did not hesitate to demonstrate his distaste for some religious and sociocultural aspects. However, Islamic monuments and the existence of a morisco community, made it so that Spain did not represent a “complete other” for Muslims. Thus, throughout his trip, al-Maknasi’s reactions oscillate between pride and lament.
